Julia's story

I grew up feeling like an outsider. School was a place of constant anxiety sometimes I had friends, sometimes I didn’t, and often I felt alone. At home, life wasn’t any easier. Living in an atmosphere a mix of volatility and depression, created for me an environment of fear and uncertainty. I learnt keeping quiet, avoiding conflict, and trying to please everyone around me was the best way to survive.

Those early experiences shaped me more than I realised. I struggled to set boundaries, sought validation in unhealthy ways, and allowed myself to be treated with disrespect in friendships, relationships, and even in business. My self-worth was fragile, and when challenges came, I often froze instead of facing them with confidence.

But every setback became a teacher. From toxic relationships, betrayal, financial struggles, and even moments when I nearly gave up, I discovered something vital: 

Resilience can be trained. Confidence can be built. Strength can be created from the inside out.

How Fitness Changed My Life

In January 1993, a friend invited me to join a gym. We walked into a gritty, spit-and-sawdust bodybuilders’ gym in Northwest London, and I immediately felt at home. That small, humble gym became the start of my health and fitness journey not just to feel stronger, more confident, and able to protect myself, but to take pride in my appearance and my capabilities.

My friend eventually left, but I stayed and it was the best decision I ever made. Fitness quickly became more than a hobby; it became a passion, a discipline, and eventually a career that has given me freedom, challenges, blessings, and unbelievable opportunities.

By 1998, I studied to become a fitness instructor and personal trainer, taking my first part-time job at a gym in 1999 while still holding down a full-time job. In 2000, I went full-time, growing my client base and experience, until in 2003 I launched my first business: Anatomy Matters.

Along the way, I studied sports and remedial soft tissue therapy and massage, which opened doors to working with professional athletes across rugby, tennis, motorsports, and more. I learned first-hand how teams operate to get athletes to peak performance: the dedication, focus, willpower, and tailored support it takes to succeed at the highest level. Working alongside leading medical professionals, I gained extensive experience and  acute understanding and knowledge of the demands being placed on your body and mind through rigorous training, work, environment and everyday life.

Over the years, I furthered my expertise in corrective exercise, performance enhancement, general pathology, and body-mind work, combining these approaches into a holistic understanding of how the body and mind work together. This foundation became the cornerstone of Unleash Your Inner Athlete, allowing me to guide clients to peak physical, mental, and emotional performance.

​A key part of my journey was learning that the stories we carry from childhood shape how we respond to life. I realized that past experiences fear, rejection, trauma, self-doubt  had unconsciously influenced my choices in relationships, work, and personal growth. Learning to work with my subconscious, rather than against it, was transformative.

Health and fitness became more than just physical. They became my foundation: a way to manage stress, build confidence, and feel in control of my life. Combining physical training with mindset and emotional awareness unlocked the ability to respond to challenges calmly, make clear decisions, and move forward with purpose.
